If the President had not opened his mouth about Syria, made his commitment and stated his red line, I would not favor intervention other than humanitarian aid to refugees and victims there, but now our credibility is on the line, and Iran and others are watching closely to see what we do. We are now stuck between two bad options:
(1) If we take military action against Assad, we will help the rebels and possibly end up with Al-Qaeda in control after Assad is removed, because you can bet they are working with the rebels.
(2) If we help Assad, we will be accused of helping a heartless dictator who has used chemical weapons on his own people!
There is really only one military action that stands a chance of being credible that might help us against both bad options and that is to take out and crater Assad’s Runways and aircraft, including helicopters – the latter could still be used to deliver chemical agents. That way, whichever power takes over control, their air power would be severely crippled, and the victor would be significantly weakened should they decide to attack us in the future!
Before taking any military action, we should first secretly consult with Russia and China and tell them this is our only option, but they can benefit economically from this decision, because they can sell Assad (or the victorious rebels) the aircraft and helicopters that will be needed to replace the ones we destroy. We can assure Russia we will be careful to not destroy their naval base or any of their other facilities and will reimburse them if we do because of possible collateral damage.
In the future, we should be very careful about imposing red lines - especially when dealing with two enemies – killing each other. While Muslims are killing each other, they are not killing us! We should remain watchful observers, because all Muslims – whether Al-Qaeda or Hezbollah terrorists, or the more moderate Sunnis or Shiites – all have one common enemy – us! They all have one eventual religious goal of establishing a worldwide Islamic Caliphate, and we and Israel are their main enemies standing in their way! Just know this about most or all Muslims: most of them are not violent terrorists or extremists, but they all happily follow and walk down the bloody trail to their future worldwide Islamic Caliphate!
Therefore, in our future dealings with Islamic countries, other than defending ourselves against them if/when they attack us, we should only offer humanitarian aid to the victims and refugees of war and/or natural or man made disasters - nothing less – nothing more!
